One of ACTT’s many responsibilities is to register post secondary and tertiary education institutions or specialized programmes that have been evaluated and found to meet or exceed stated internationally acceptable criteria for educational quality. Accreditation must also be maintained by continuous improvement and periodic re-evaluation. The key components of the accreditation process are institutional self-evaluation and external evaluations conducted by teams of expert assessors established by ACTT.
ACTT conducts both institutional and programme accreditation.
Institutional accreditation considers the holistic characteristics of the institution and evaluates the organizational capacity to deliver quality educational programmes at the post secondary or tertiary level. Institutional accreditation does not analyze any specific programme individually however programmes are reviewed as a part of the consideration of the entire institution. It examines such institutional characteristics as governance, administrative strength, academic policies and procedures, quality of faculty, physical facilities and financial stability.
Specialized programme accreditation focuses its attention on a particular educational programme within the institution. A close working relationship between ACTT and recognized professional associations, in their fields of expertise helps to ensure that the requirements for accreditation are related to the current requirements for professional practice. Programme accreditation evaluates among other things, the quality of teaching and the support of learning, design and planning of programmes of study, assessment and feedback to learners, learning environments and learner support systems, programme evaluation and quality assurance systems. The general conditions of the institution are therefore considered in the context in which the programme is offered.
