Quality Management should be the cornerstone of any organisation that chooses to be effective in its operations and responsible for the quality of the product or service it offers to stakeholders.
Within the tertiary education sector, quality management is an essential part of an institution’s operating system. In this regard, the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT) hosted a workshop on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, entitled “Institutional Quality Management System- Assuring Quality and Improving Institutional Effectiveness”. The workshop was designed for Quality Management Representatives from tertiary level institutions with the aim of building a greater awareness of the importance of establishing, implementing and maintaining an effective Quality Management System.
Dr Michael Dowlath, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ACTT, in addressing the participants stated that the programmes that institutions are delivering must be student-centred and must focus on satisfying clients. He postulated further that lecturers may focus on delivering a 3 hour lecture as an indicator of quality but this may not be the best thing for the learner. He encouraged all present to move away from the archaic practices they have inherited from their past teachers. He emphasised the fact that modern educators must have a better sense of how to treat with students, some of whom are adults.
He further discussed the coordination of resources and theoretical practices to ensure students learn skills that can help them enter the work place and solve problems. “We are familiar with the definition of quality as fitness for purpose, but think about fitness of purpose and ask yourselves, how does my institution’s vision and mission cater to the present-day economic climate or benefit the student?”
Facilitated by Dr Ruby Alleyne, a leading quality management practitioner in Trinidad and Tobago, the Quality Management System representatives underwent an intense training in building quality frameworks with accountability, transparency and continual improvement. Dr Alleyne also focussed on Monitoring, Maintaining and Improving upon quality systems, stressing on the Pareto Principle which states that 80% of the problems are as a result of process and only 20% as a result of people.
